Like many members of our club I didn’t get an invitation to The Royal Wedding. I had a prior engagement anyway but then we already have our own royalty … Chris Judd and Gary Ablett … and both just as balding as Prince William. Furthermore who needs to go to the UK to see royalty when Real Tennis royalty comes to Ballarat from the UK and participates in the two ARTA events.

Claire Vigrass is the best woman player in the world and is off a handicap of 7. That’s the lowest ever achieved in ladies ranks … she also goes out with Rob Fahey … so take that William and Kate. Sister Sarah and Karen Hird also came out from the UK and together with Rosemary Snell from RMTC we were treated to some great tennis.

ARTA LADIES AUSTRALIAN OPEN DOUBLES 2011
Claire Vigrass/Sarah Vigrass defeated Karen Hird/Rosemary Snell 6/1 6/3

There were a couple of round robins run in conjunction with the ARTA events. Sarah Bartlett is Rob Bartlett’s daughter … Rob was the Club’s first pro and is still remembered fondly. Together with Lesley O’Byrne and Rosemary Snell from RMTC they joined the locals in two groups. Also great to see Stephanie and Elizabeth Williams back in town and in true William’s manner win both events. I just wish they were sisters … you know the Williams sisters, tennis royalty … it would have been so right.
