RMTC has hosted the 2013 Oz Am Championships running from Friday 31 May to Sunday 2 June.  Reigning Champion Kieran Booth, Hobart’s finest and now resident in Melbourne was the winner for the last 3 years, winning the last 2 over BTC Club Champion Daniel Williams.  This year he was going for one better than the Brisbane Lions and aiming at a “Fourpeat”.  KB is currently the undisputed best amateur in the world and ranks as world #6 behind Fahey, Virgona, Riviere, Bryn Sayers from UK and multiple World title challenger Tim Chisolm.  He is fresh from a semifinal appearance in the Australian Open as well as winning the Open doubles and was obviously using this tournament to work on things for the upcoming French Open.

Best of the early matches were 5 set affairs between James Gould and Paul Rosedale and also Peter Estcourt and Graeme Blundstone.

The final best of 5 sets match was played Sunday afternoon and Kieran played BTC’s Michael Williams, current Australian Junior Champion, and with the two players being certainly Australia’s hardest hitting players there were plenty of forces as well as long ground rallies.  Michael’s recent good form included a quarter final appearance at the Australian Open with a creditable performance against Cam Riviere as well as winning the Junior title the previous week.  KB won in straight sets 6/3 6/1 6/3 with the first set in particular showcasing Michael’s improved play  and at his current handicap of 7 will be looking forward to playing the best from USA and UK in the forthcoming junior team tour.
